Loops & Threads Petite Purl is Michaels' store-brand chenille: a thinner, velvety, medium-weight yarn for garments, hats and amigurumi. It's one of the store brands in our price tracker. If your store is out of your color, or you'd like to shop somewhere else, here's how it compares with Hobby Lobby's store-brand chenille and with name-brand alternatives. We list the fiber, weight, yardage, hook size and price per 100 yards.

What Petite Purl is

Per the label text (as listed for Michaels item #10750795):

Price: Michaels' website blocks automated price checks, so we couldn't read the price on Michaels.com. The lowest online price we could verify was $11.59 from Shipt (Michaels store) on Oct 22, 2026, before delivery fees. That works out to $2.16 per 100 yards, which is still the lowest per yard in this comparison. Once Michaels' product feed is connected, it will replace this price.

Closest matches: #4 medium chenille

These have the same weight category as Petite Purl, so they're the best starting point for a pattern written for it.

Yarn Bee Velvety Smooth Aran (Hobby Lobby)

Hobby Lobby's own medium chenille is the other store-brand option. It's 100% polyester, 3.5 oz / 161 yd, with a 6.5 mm (K-10½) hook and a crochet gauge of 11 sts × 13 rows = 4 in, so it works up looser than Petite Purl. At $5.49 a skein it's $3.41 per 100 yd. See Velvety Smooth Aran at Hobby Lobby.

Bernat Future Hope (Yarnspirations)

This is the closest on paper. It's a #4 chenille with a 5 mm (H-8) hook and a crochet gauge of 14 sc × 16 rows = 4 in, close to Petite Purl's 15 sc. Each 170 g skein has 333 yd, and it's made from 100% recycled polyester. At $11.99 list it's $3.60 per 100 yd. A sweater-sized 1,611 yd (three skeins of Petite Purl) would take 5 skeins. See Bernat Future Hope at Yarnspirations.

Hobbii Toucan Fine

Hobbii describes it as the thinner version of its Toucan chenille. It's medium weight, 100 g / 196.85 yd (180 m), with a 6 mm (J-10) hook and a crochet gauge of 11 sts × 13 rows = 4 in. That's a looser gauge than Petite Purl, so swatch before you swap. It costs $7.70 a skein, or $3.91 per 100 yd. See Toucan Fine at Hobbii.

Go Handmade Bohème Velvet Double (Hobbii)

This is a velour-style yarn in small 50 g / 76.55 yd balls. Hobbii lists 4–5 mm needles and a knit gauge of 18 sts × 18 rows. It doesn't list a crochet hook. At $7.20 each for 1–3 balls, it's the priciest per yard here ($9.41 per 100 yd). It makes the most sense for small, detailed pieces. See Bohème Velvet Double at Hobbii.

Plusher, chunkier options

These aren't drop-in replacements. They're bulkier, so stitch counts and finished sizes will change. They're good picks when you want a puffier amigurumi or a faster blanket. See the full bulky chenille comparison for store-brand options too.

How to choose a substitute

  1. Match the weight number first. A #4 pattern wants a #4 yarn. See yarn weights explained.
  2. Compare gauge, not just weight. Chenilles in the same category can still work up differently. Petite Purl is 15 sc per 4 in, Future Hope is 14 and Toucan Fine is 11.
  3. Do the yardage math. Multiply the pattern's skeins by 537 yd, then divide by the new yarn's yardage and round up.
  4. Swatch it. Chenille hides stitches, so a gauge swatch is worth the 15 minutes.
  5. Check care labels. Some are machine washable and dryable, and some say lay flat to dry. See chenille tips.
