Beginner crochet supplies: the short list
You don't need a craft room to start crocheting. Here's what we'd put in a first-project bag, and what can wait.
The must-haves
- One crochet hook. A mid-size hook, such as 5 mm (H-8) to 6 mm (J-10), matches the range the Craft Yarn Council suggests for medium (#3–#4) yarns. See hook sizes.
- A skein of smooth, light-colored #4 yarn. Smooth yarn shows your stitches, and a lighter color makes them easier to see. Save fuzzy, dark or chenille yarns for later projects.
- Scissors. Any small, sharp pair.
- A yarn (tapestry) needle. A blunt, large-eye needle for weaving in ends.
- Stitch markers. Locking markers or even safety pins. They mark the first stitch of a row or round.
- A tape measure. For gauge and sizing.
Nice to have later
- A hook set in several sizes
- Ergonomic-handle hooks if your hand gets tired
- A project bag
- A row counter
Kimberly's tip: Make a dishcloth or a simple square before a big project. You'll learn tension without committing a lot of yarn.
Next: how to read a yarn label so you can pick that first skein with confidence.
